strip mall estate sale

generally estate sales are held in homes but recently I attended a sale that took place in the empty storefront at a strip mall. apparently the sale was of a collectors many storage units...the rumor was something like 6.

there were lots of different kinds of items like a regular estate sale, including a large selection of hats & shoes...this was only one of the multiple displays:

in addition there was a very large collection of dolls. like hundreds & hundreds of them. sadly I didn't take a photo of the two big areas where the dolls were setup but trust me it was crazy:

there were even boy dolls of the paper variety:

I did take a photo of the holly hobby section, although it's blurry:

here's a closeup of one part:

I did buy some things, although not anything in these photos...I'll post that tomorrow.

1967 seventeen magazine & a coat confession

I got this vintage issue of seventeen at an estate sale recently:

there are so many great images inside, like this advertisement for the american wool council:

that coat makes me seriously lightheaded it's so fabulous. I've got it bad for vintage coats...real bad. like I counted* how many I have the other day - the numbers 1 and 8 are involved - and it's not the number that comes after seventeen...

*that count included raincoats & capes as well as winter/fall coats. I'm not sure why I think somehow that should make the total less ridiculous but I do.

if the universe was my personal shopper...

I'd think it was trying to tell me something, because first I found these patterns at the thrift store:

{I'm pretty sure something on there is german for "dress to wear while playing the accordion"}

then a reader/customer sent me a link to this dress:

{hi laura!}

and then last night I saw the movie state fair & there was adorable dress after adorable dress:

{images via old-fashioned charm except that last one which I took of my tv with my phone}

coincidence...or something more?!

p.s. dear universe - I'm not sure I have the figure for those kinds of dresses but if you put them in my thrifting path I'll give it a shot :)

thursday = embroidery

sometimes things just fall into place in such a way that you can't help but call it fate...recently I purchased a locket from the little room for a friend & the very same day I saw this post on wild olive. then a day or so later I bought a bag of scrap fabric at the thrift store & there was one little piece of this sweet pink chicken fabric that was perfect because she loves chickens. so when the locket arrived in the mail {very quickly btw considering all the pieces are made to order} I was all set to add a little bit of extra love:

yay fate!

and for this week's vintage embroidery pattern here are two more animals from the serial #1582 sheet I mentioned last week:

I love the jaunty way the crocodile/alligator is strolling along!

happy stitching :)

making a scene

if I could knit, these vests are exactly the kind of thing I would make:

I wonder what they're thinking as they gaze so intently at the "country winter" afghan...

recently thrifted

these were too wonderfully weird {& cheap - $3/pair} not to bring home from the thrift store...they're marked masketeers on the back.

quick online research found a little bit of info about the company here...and a couple of their other designs here, here & here

thursday = embroidery

this week's vintage embroidery pattern is from a sheet stamped serial #1582. there are a bunch of animals on the sheet but some of my favorites were the dogs so I pulled out 3 to share this week:

and now, it seems only fitting somehow that this post also include 3 videos of three dog night:

well, in my mind at least it seemed fitting :)

happy stitching!

how I use porcelaine pens

for awhile now I've been meaning to do a post on how I went about making the plates I posted about here, here & here...and this weekend I finally did it. here are the supplies you'll need:

{note: for some reason I put my orange pen in the photo even though I actually used my black one}

the first step is to create the lettering - for the plates I made previously I used the home sweet home font which I found via this post on how about orange. this time however I wanted something different so I looked through some of my vintage cross-stitch books:

I used my computer to size & re-create my favorite using the "x" from the font but you could just do it by hand or with graph paper.

next tape carbon paper onto the back of the printed design:

then tape the combo onto the ceramic item - since mine was curved I cut in certain places to help the paper lay flat:

using a pen draw over the design - to make sure your lines are nice & dark you'll want to press hard and don't be afraid to do it a couple times. before you remove the papers you can look at your pen marks to make sure you got all the lines:

this is how it will look when you remove the papers. be careful not to touch it or you'll smug it, on the bright side if you're not happy with your placement you can just wipe it off & try again!

next step is to draw over all the lines with the porcelaine pen. I used the bullet tip on this one as well as all my previous projects. {have a piece of scrap paper available to write on if the flow is too heavy or if you get something on the tip.}

I just take my time and try not think too much about it...keep in mind that little mistakes won't be as noticeable as you think they will when you're all done:

the pen dries very quickly but if you make a mistake you can scrape it off, I just use my fingernail. the last step is to wait 24 hours then bake it according to the directions which will make it dishwasher safe. for the decorative plates I did previously I didn't bother baking though.

so there you go...hope that all made sense, if you have a question feel free to post a comment & I'll do my best to answer it.

UPDATE: after following the manufacturers directions for baking the mug it was NOT dishwasher safe! some of the pen came off :( very gently handwashing, while avoiding rubbing the pen marks worked but obviously is not a great solution for an item that is used often. in the future I'm going to reserve doing this on only decorative items...

some news & a giveaway

{note: I've updated some links since this morning now that the issue is available & I've added a sneak peek to the magazine as well!}

so a little while back I got an email from the very sweet amy of inspire & co. asking if I'd be interested in being part of her spring magazine...I was beyond flattered & said of course I would! I even did three new photos specially for the occasion:

to say I am excited & honored to be part of the magazine is a huge understatement! huge.

I got to see a sneak peek of the issue the other day & it is fabulous - there are more than 170 pages & 20 plus projects! and there are no ads so it's just project after project after lovely image after lovely image... the content is so inspiring! there are so many talented contributors, including mary englebriet - it's definitely worth the $3.30, so I hope you'll check it out. here's a little peek of my section:

and the cover:

if you'd like a little taste of what to expect here's what the xmas issue was like and here's a little peek at the spring issue itself:

as a way to share my excitement I'd like to do a little giveaway for one print from my shop...just leave a comment {about any old thing} on this post by 9pm cst sunday night {the 13th} & I'll announce the winner in next monday's post. oh, and there's no problem entering if you live outside the us - this giveaway is open to everyone :)

p.s. if you're visiting the blog for the first time via the magazine...hello & welcome, I hope you enjoy your time here :)
