thursday = embroidery

I'm not sure when I found this project by haylie waring on design*sponge:

but when I did I thought to myself I would like to make a button display hoop with embroidered line-work. and so I did:

instead of doing french knots I used black beads in two sizes because I am lazy & also because I have not yet mastered the french knot:

here is the reinterpreted line-work {based on a 12" hoop} if you'd also like to make one:

happy stitching!

I heart fabric

especially vintage fabric...which kim over at the very cool true up blog asked me some questions about as part of her vintage fabric collector series. I was very flattered to be included & hope I don't sound too dorky or boring :)

if you'd like to see some of my fabric collection check out this flickr set and if you're visiting the blog for the first time from the interview - welcome!

my peeps

two of my sweet & talented friends have some exciting new things happening so I hope you'll excuse me while I brag a little bit about them :)

I've mentioned my friend jill several times before so you might already know what an amazing illustrator she is...well, now her work is available in digital form at two peas in a bucket!

and my friend patty has opened an etsy shop called adorna to sell her beautiful earrings:

I'm so lucky to know both these wonderful women...congrats you two & all my very best wishes!!

{have a great weekend!}

baby sweaters & links

so...I'm going to try selling some of my mom's hand-knit baby sweaters on etsy!

I suggested we come up with some kind of sob story about how she needs money to encourage pity purchases but she refused! she told me to just tell everyone the truth, which is that as she's gotten older & had to slow down {happily she recognizes that continuing to roller skate at 83 has its hazards} she's found herself enjoying knitting more than ever. and although I would prefer she only knit things for me to wear, her favorite things to knit are for babies. but there aren't really that many babies in our family - so I suggested we try selling the surplus on etsy.

so there you have it...I believe I've accidentally started my very own sweatshop. now buy the sweaters or the old lady gets it!

{link}

{this one sold right after I listed it on etsy last night :) thank you martha!}

also today I wanted to thank some of the nice people who've mentioned my work on their blogs recently. I hope you'll follow the links & maybe discover something new!

the lovely ez of creature comforts and sweet katie of the constant gatherer both did wonderful posts to announce my prints making their debut on etsy. I am seriously humbled to be included on blogs that feature such beautiful work!

I almost fainted when I saw that my lowly embroidery naked tote was mentioned on the sublime stitching blog by jenny hart herself!

I did faint when pam asked the dog & I to do interviews for her blog! {who knew I could get just as anxious virtually talking about myself as I do in real life?} jack’s is here & mine is here.

I love that Alison posted photos of the print she bought from me on her blog so I could see it in its new home! I think it looks very happy there :)

jaime is another print customer who is not only very nice but also happens to be a writer who very generously wrote about my work on the Australian blog babyology after she used some of my photos to decorate her home. it still floors me people actually buy my work to hang in their homes...I find it insanely flattering!

my images were #’s 2 & 3 on the very adorable elsie’s {I wish so bad that I was as photogenic as this girl} recent 10 things I love sunday and oh how bad do I want #1!

I’m honored that rachel thought my ribbons were beautiful enough to include on her perfectly named blog smile and wave. btw – she scores really great vintage finds so you should check out her etsy shop!

I also really like the name of christy’s blog dandy bread & candy, but not just because she mentioned my photos…I just honestly think we don’t use the word dandy enough in general conversation anymore!

the fine people over at bees & trees {seriously, how do people come up with such great blog names?!} included not one but two of my photos in their etsy treasuries! I am so not worthy…

And finally {yeah, I know sorry…this got kind of out of hand!} bri over at craft begins has so many great finds, I was honored to be included in a Friday favorites :)

have a lovely weekend!

thursday = embroidery

I’ve got quite a bit to share today so you might want to get comfortable…
{click on the images if you'd like to see them larger}

first, and I still can’t believe this one – I won the Baby Quilt contest on makebabystuff.com! I am seriously beside myself & feel like it’s a dream because I thought I stood no chance whatsoever!

secondly, my plastic doilie necklace {and my freckled chest} was featured on the Craftzine blog today {thank you Rachel!}.

moving on to embroidery related news since today is thursday:

I received the new uncommon goods catalog in the mail the other day & was once again struck by these embroidered items {plus how cool is that shadow box?!}:

I’d seen them in person years ago at a gift shop & started to design my own based on my hometown but abandoned the project at some point…I should pick it back up because it would be so cool if I could pull it off.

I have another peek at my current project for you:

I’m hoping I will be listing the first embroidered pattern collages in my etsy shop this weekend…

And finally {see, I told you there’d be a lot!} here’s this week’s embroidery transfer:

I found this at an estate sale last weekend & thought it was just about the funniest thing ever. As well as interesting because it was from a manufacturer I was unfamiliar with.

{The paper is scanning very badly so they need a lot of clean up…therefore right now I’ve only got one to share, but I plan to do the others & post them in the coming days.}

Well, that was a long post…thanks for sticking it out. Now I probably won’t have anything to write about tomorrow!

a squirrel finds his purpose

waaaay back in march I stitched up this squirrel and until this past weekend he sat forlorn & unused.

but then a trip to target & the purchase of a $1 reusable shopping bag changed all that & gave his little life meaning:

thank you so much for all your fisher price comments & memories - they all made me smile!

also, I'd like to say hi! to those of you who have come via free quilt patterns, which has added doe-c-doe to their list. I post about embroidery on thursdays, but you're welcome to visit anytime...

monday = thrifted

thanks for all the nice comments on the photos - I'm so flattered you liked them!

I was never that into photography until I started this blog...it seems like it's a natural evolution since I see many other bloggers have had the same experience. In fact, this weekend I bought this beautiful photo from jennifer. and am so excited to see that the lovely bettyninja has a new etsy shop for her photos!

so, in addition to reading blogs & wistfully looking at etsy I also did some estate sale shopping:

oh, this weekend I also entered the make baby stuff quilt contest - wish me luck!
{I'm so glad I didn't look at any of the other submission before I entered or I would have chickened out since they're all amazing!}

p.s. I'm posting some individual pattern photos on flickr if you're interested...I found some great little girl ones I had to share.

thursday = embroidery

I'm very excited to share a recently finished project today! I mentioned on Monday that I went to a birthday party for a one-year-old last weekend and today I'm going to show one of the handmade gifts I made him:

after I posted the girl paper doll, I realized I didn't really explain that the girl/boy is paper but all the clothes are embroidered fabric.

next thursday I'll share the other piece I made, which is my favorite of the two because it involves a dressed animal & there's nothing cuter {I think} than animals wearing clothes!

And finally I'd like to thank the make & take blog for making doe-c-doe their blog of the week!

whew - that was a long post! I better go take a nap...

Thursday, July 31, 2008

hey, look!

the very sweet EZ featured my plastic doilie necklace on creature comforts!

I'm so honored & flattered! and so flipped out to see me on such a cool blog...wow

I love her blog...you read it don't you? if you don't you should!

I'll be back later today with an embroidery post...

friday = misc.

Friday, I like you so much - we should go out sometime for lunch or a drink after work!

Not much to share today, need to get going on my list of to-do's for the weekend...but first here are some fun links:

A wonderful fabric & button wreath project from inspired ideas

Did you see sweet jessie’s latest project - its beautiful!

Heather is having a cool embroidery related giveaway

And because I can't do a post without photos:

That’s it for me…hope you have a great weekend!

thursday = embroidery

Oh wow! My embroidered lampshade was featured on ohdeedoh {which is the nursery blog offspring of apartment therapy}. This is so cool & I’m very honored – thank you & welcome new visitors!

Also today for embroidery thursday, I want to share a lovely gift I was given by one of my mom’s friend – Geraldine.

She purchased & began this bedspread some time ago and has passed it on to me to finish & use because she knew I was a stitcher. Isn’t that sweet?!

I love the colors & the design. I think it will make a wonderful spring/summer cover for the bed. I’ve never done cross-stitch before but since this one is already stamped with the design I think I can handle it. I’m so excited to continue the beautiful work that’s already been put into this!

Finally, here are today’s embroidery transfers for your stitching enjoyment:

{the deer/Chihuahua hybrid is my favorite from this collection}

{although the squirrel is a very close second!}

Have a nice evening all…

wednesday = books

So no big surprise today…our book is:

Title: Look Alive Libby
Author: Catherine Woolley
Illustrator: Liz Dauber
Copyright: 1962 {mine is the seventh printing, May 1975}
Publisher: William Morrow & Co.

I scanned the story quickly & from what I can gather Libby spends the summer with her Aunt in a cabin rental by the water…how nice for Libby you’re thinking:

But actually things do not go smoothly & there’s some trouble in paradise:

And of course there’s the burying of the Aunt in the basement after Libby has killed & cut her up…

No! I’m just kidding about that! That’s just what this image made me think of. I’m sure there’s a perfectly good, non-criminal story behind that image…

I also had to show this image of the sign out card that was in the book, isn't that sweet?! {well, except for that big discarded stamp across it...that's sad}

I’m going to show other books from the stack I photographed in the coming weeks so I hope you’ll come back and check it out!

p.s. Welcome new readers who have come via True Up – I hope you’ll be regular visitors from now on. Or well, at least on Tuesday’s when I feature vintage fabric!
