thursday = embroidery

I’ve got a bunch of stuff to share with you on this lovely embroidery day!

First, Rachel is having a giveaway on her blog average jane crafter for a Sublime Stitching Craft Pad which looks very cool! You only have until Friday, March 7th at midnight so you better hurry on over there…

{Rachel also tagged me, the sneaky bugger! I’ll save that for another day…I have to make up, I mean think up, some more random things about myself first}

This pretty girl over at loobylu along with a chain stitch how to.

And I’ve got a finished embroidery project to share with you.

I recently saw this painting on flickr by lisa congdon and was inspired to create an embroidered birch forest with a little deer silhouette.

I decided on a little plastic deer painted black to create a more 3-D affect.

Then I put it all into a shadow box:

And don’t forget to vote for what color I should paint my newly thrifted owl!

And thank you everyone who has voted so far – I’m so thrilled with the response!

Wow! That embroidered art is AMAZING! (and my daughter would adore the deer - she's a deer/horse/general animal lover). So cool!

thanks for the link, too! :)

I a bit of a lurker but I just had to comment! I super <3 your birch forest! How does one "do" trees? I'm an embroidery newbie.

I am absolutely amazed at the wonderful shadow box. How cool to be inspired by something and create such neat emrboidery like that. You are a whiz. Hey I wanted to share a great etsy vendor with you. She sells little cupcake toppers. I just bought a herd of 18 deer- they will of course be up on my blog soon. Here she is: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5105043

I immediately thought you should paint the owl the aqua, but now that I see the last one went aqua, I vote for green.

Your shadow box embroidery is beautiful! What a clever idea. Is that linen you embroidered on?

I just wanted to tell you how INCREDIBLE your birch embroidery is. Though it looks as though more than one person beat me to the punch. And doing it as a shadow box is a great idea. If you ever want to share how you did the birch trees, I'd be all ears (or eyes, I guess...)

This is Katherine, by the way. Thanks for the tips on commenting. :)

alli - yes please, do come back soon!

kate - I did the brown first, in stem stitch & then I filled in with the white in what I guess you would call a large satin stitch, working around the brown. If you click on the "feeling stitchy" link under my embroidery blogs you'll find great resources for learning how to embroidery.

bettyninja - thanks for the etsy seller info, that stuff is so cute!

Thanks for voting sarah & jack!

Yes, early bird special, I used a natural color linen, which is my favorite thing to stitch on!

Hi Katherine - I'm so glad you stopped by & left a comment! I'm afraid after doing so many trees I'm probably not going to do another one for quite awhile, but if I do I'll try to think ahead and take some photos to show my process.

And thanks everyone!

I love love love your birch trees. Your embroidery is gorgeous. I'm into trees and bark these days (who knows why) and hadn't thought of birch trees. hmmm.

your birch trees are wonderful, and the plastic deer offsets them nicely!
