zelman's - part 1

back in august 2008 I took these photos of a storefront in downtown wichita which fascinated me since it appeared one day they had simply shut the door & walked away.

it appears there had been a couple articles in the paper before about the store, the family who owned it, plans for the building & the upcoming sale. but I had missed those & just happened to catch the sale notice last thursday.

by the time the doors opened at 8am for the sale there were probably about 40 people waiting & talking - some were antique dealers, some were people who remembered shopping there, some knew the family who owned the store & others were just curious like me to finally see inside...

I think the most important thing to take away from this is that apparently Macgyver became a mannequin after the series ended, and he hung out regularly at the shop. :)

I love those scary/hot mannequins. And the Wrangler box--"Remember the W is silent." That place is a time capsule!

Beautiful! I love all your shots, but the paper towel dispenser might be my favorite. What a fun day that must have been.

i absolutely love your blog and your photographs. i am in awe and slightly jealous of your zelmans experience! i have lived in the UK for nearly 17 years and really miss america and really miss all the fantastic old shops and flea markets and thrifting and americana and amazing finds. but i am getting a dose of it all through your blog...so thank you!
