from the pamphlet: "these garments are designed to be very tight-fitting, and are intended to be approximately 6 inches smaller than chest measurement in order to obtain the 'stretched' look when worn."

er... they look like some potholders my mom used to have. ;)
Wow, this totally made my day! My grandmother made many of these for me in the 70's. I loved each and every one of them. I think I even still have a couple of them in a box in the basement. I will have to try to remember to look for them.
Thanks for sharing!
intentionally making the clothes smaller?
sounds new to me! ;)
well. . . they are pretty granny chic. . . so i guess it works!
{my mom SOOO had these in the 70's!}
I'm picturing my hubby in these outfits...ahhh... :)
Good heavens - *I* had that pattern book, and I made those vests one Christmas for everybody (all the women) in my then-in-laws family! What a blast from the past! I also made nose-warmers to match each one. *silly* They went over big.
Oh my! I had these patterns too. I learned to crochet when I was 6 years old, so by the time I was in high school (when these were popular) I was crocheting some of my own things. These are some of the first things that I made for myself and I wore them too. I made the ones with the flower motifs in them. Boy do I feel old!
LOL! My Mom has the exact same rib tickler as the top photo - same colors and everything - from when she was a teenager! I borrowed it when i was in high school for a Halloween party. Now my youngest sister has it in her possession and wears it occasionally (she's cute like that). Thanks for sharing! :)
Sooo cute and funny. I guess the male models were instructed to look as creepy as possible (at least, as creepy as someone can look wearing a brightly colored potholder sweater vest).
Ah yes, the old "stretched crocheted square optical illusion for larger breasts" effect. Love it!
Who in the world cam up with "rib tickler"? I think this pattern needs to stay in 1971! Thanks for a great laugh!
i love these! especially the men. could you imagine?! thanks for sharing!
I had one of these! But being as I was 6 or 7, mine didn't have that stretched look. ;)
wow - you guys made my week with your stories of making/wearing these & just all your comments in general!!
I love that the posts I do like this are so well received...it's become quite the thrifting challenge to find ones I think will amuse & amaze you but I'll do my best to keep them coming :)
Happened across your blog and as I paged through I found myself on this post. My mom made me a few of these and I loved them. I actually have two that I found at a thrift store about a year ago. Loved them!
I'm a bit worried because I actually really like the first one.
But I can't stop laughing watching the last picture. Is the guy trying to hide behind the firl? I would do the same.
