earring necklace

I recently repurposed a pair of clip-on earrings into a necklace & took photos of the process to share...

in addition to the earrings I bought a chain & jump rings at michaels

remove the clip-on component using a pair of needle nose pliers

sand down any raised or rough area that is exposed when the clip-on is removed

for the long piece to connect the two earrings I used part of a pin back

I cut off the pin & catch at either end

then sanded down the edges so they were nice & smooth

next I used e-6000 glue {be warned its stinky & toxic} to secure the pin back to the earrings

after it was dry I used more glue to add the jump rings - a stretched out paper clip provided support while it dried

finally I removed one link from the chain so I had two ends to attach to the jump rings & there you go...a necklace!

**edit to add: soldering the pin back & jump rings onto the earrings would be a more secure way to construct this but I don't know how yet. if you use glue, double check you've used enough on the jump rings especially & just keep in mind when you wear it that it is more delicate than soldered type jewelry.

That is beautiful, and such a clever use for clip-on earrings, which I have always found have me whimpering with pain after five minutes on my ears.

The February issue of MSL has directions for turning old brooches into a necklace. I love the symmetry of your earring placement. :)

Excellent tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing. I love the modern look that you have created with a pair of outdated earrings. Here's hoping we all find such great earrings to work with in our treasure hunts.

you are amazing. before i saw the picture, i thought this is undoable by me. Thank you for the tutorial. It's kind of how I craft: pretty practical, with loads of recycling if at all possible.

then, when i read your post, I realize that I just made a great Peace necklace, also repurposing an earring for it. I have to say, I love how mine came out. It's on my blog.

This is such a great idea! I will have to do it with some earrings I have that are too heavy to wear on my earlobes.

Anonymous said...

Oh wow! I will definitely use this idea to re-purpose some of my grandmother's costume jewelery that is missing its mate or just too heavy for my ears. Awesome!

This is a very clever tutorial. Loved it the minute I saw it on Craftgossip. Now I'm wondering if my mother kept her old clip ons!

OK to blog and link about your tutorial with the use of one photo? I couldn't find your email.

i'd love to link over to this tutorial from my blog. i keep a special eye out for reusing materials in crafty projects! let me know if that'd be cool.

cheers,

Clare said...

Wow what a good idea! I love anything which reuses unwanted materials and I always see clipon earrings in thrift stores. Once I've found something to sand with I'll be trying this out!

Beth H said...

Wow! this is an awesome tutorial. such a great idea for re-purposing all of of those pretty clip-on earrings that languish in thrift store display cases.

Brooklynbee said...

So cool! Can you tell us more about the sanding tool you used? Where to find? Is it expensive/difficult to use?

Viv said...

Nice! I have several pair of vintage (code for old....and kinda cheap) earrings that I would never wear as earrings but as a centerpiece of a necklace they would be striking.

gina said...

wowza - thank you everyone for all the nice comments!! :)

brooklynbee - the sanding tool I use is a black & ddecker RTX rotary tool. it's very easy to use but it was a hand-me-down so I don't know how much it costs or even if they make them anymore. sorry I don't have more info for you...

rootmix & the beading gem - I'm flattered you'd like to link, please feel free & thank you for asking :)

thanks for pointing out that MS feature laeroport - I'll have to check it out!

please let me know if any of you make & post a necklace inspired by this tutorial - I'd love to see & again thanks for leaving a comment, I loved them all :)

Thanks so much for sharing & making it so easy to understand! :)

I did something similar to this last year where I took a pin and turned it into a necklace! I wish I'd had that power tool though!

Also, I'd love to link this to my blog. Would you mind my using a picture?

I just ran across this today, but it is a wonderful idea. I am excited to go through my old jewelry box and look for earrings at garage sales that I can use for this. Thanks for sharing.

Sandy said...

Glue was the only option in this case. Jewelry soldering uses a torch and high heat. Those lovely earrings would've been turned into a base metal & white puddle of goo.

What a wonderful idea. I'm so glad i kept those old clip-ons! Thanks

lizz said...

oh this is so gorgeous :)

Shea Davis said...

I cannot wait to try this out!!! Does this work with all size clip ons? ldavisitvc@gmail.com

Mary Anne said...

You could also use a 20 gauge wire to create a bail with loops at the end so you could glue that, and then you don't have to worry about the small jump rings. Lovely repurposing job!
