embroidery transfer sharing on flickr

I've just made all my embroidery transfers on flickr private because it has come to my attention {thanks flor!} that the Vogart trademark is owned by Plaid Industries and therefore posting them is a copyright infringement.

Since I don’t have any new embroidery to share with you here’s an older piece I haven’t shown yet.


I’ve made several of these embroidered topped boxes as gifts – this one was my first & I’ve kept it for myself. I have another one in the works now but I’m moving like molasses lately!

I have some old McCall’s Needlework magazines and whenever I look through them there are all these ads with crazy amazing kits you could buy, with little order forms to fill out and send in. How cool would it be to fill one of those out, enclose a check and get a vintage kit back in the mail?! Like if mail could travel back & forth in time...this is the kind of stuff I daydream about!

Right now I’m in between embroidery projects so I thought I’d share something I did awhile ago:


When my friend became pregnant I decided I really wanted to make a crib quilt even though my sewing skills were basic at best & I had never before taken on such a big project. It actually went pretty well & I was very happy with the way it came out.

I used this pattern for the embroidery & added the numbers myself. {counting sheep to fall asleep…get it?!}




The fabrics were mostly from my vintage stash, although I bought a big piece of the blue & white dot for the back & that strip on the front. Oh, and that little piece of red fabric under the first sheep is from Joann’s.

Happy Embroidery Day! Today I’ve got a Vogart pattern as well as a finished project to share…

First the finished project!

I used Badbird’s free January pattern for this wall-hanging gift for a sweet baby boy I know.


{I ironed it after taking the photo so it doesn’t hang so funny anymore}

I added the color & name on the computer, printed it on transfer paper from bestblanks, transferred it to the fabric then finally outlined stitched everything.


That was the easy part…the sewing, as always, gave me some trouble because I’m just not comfortable using a sewing machine yet. I added the orange dot fabric, which is actually a vintage napkin cut in half & the ric rac pretty easily. It was putting that binding on that just about killed me! I faked it at the corners, which I think gives it a very handmade look – that’s my story & I’m sticking to it! The other side is a very cute little orange dot on red fabric I got at Joann’s as a fat quarter & in between is a piece of quilt filler.

I didn’t come up with a good hanging solution but the sweet parents of the sweet baby boy were clever enough to think to add a dowel to make it hang nice – I wish I’d thought of that! Overall I’m very happy with how this came out & really enjoyed seeing how much the recipients liked it.

Okay, I know I say this every week but is it really Thursday already?!

{I swear, Thursday is always hiding around the corner, giggling in anticipation for the moment it can jump out and surprise the crap out of me!}

Today I’ve got a finished embroidery project to share with you:


I made these for my guy because he likes bugs; he takes beautiful photos of them in fact.


I bought the Martha Stewart shadow boxes at Michaels on clearance {these are the smaller size}. The green paper is also Martha’s.


I’m really happy with the way these came out!

Oh, do I dare say the word…

Spring!

I think its here, I mean I know on the calendar it says its here, but I feel it in my heart & soul too.

I thought I’d share this guy I found a couple weekends ago when I was cleaning & organizing my work area:


He’s an Aunt Martha Pattern which I bought at Joann’s {I think} and stitched up this past summer.

I think I might hang him up on my workroom wall in a hoop as a reminder that I can work on fabric that isn’t white or natural! I really like this color combination…yeah, I need to hang this up…maybe right now…

I think Embroidery Day really helps get me through to Friday…Thursday can be a tough day because you want it to be Friday but its just not.

When I saw this image on flickr I knew I had to stitch it up.


I don’t know what I’m going to do with this yet so its not totally finished but I couldn’t wait to show it because I’m really happy with the way it turned out {although its really more orange than yellow but it scanned funny}. I just printed it out onto the kind of paper you can send through your printer & then transfer to fabric with an iron. Then I just stitched over the black lines.

I’ve got a bunch of stuff to share with you on this lovely embroidery day!

I recently saw this painting on flickr by lisa congdon and was inspired to create an embroidered birch forest with a little deer silhouette.

I decided on a little plastic deer painted black to create a more 3-D affect.

Then I put it all into a shadow box:

I stitched this little lady up awhile ago when I was first learning how to embroidery:


Well, it sounds from the comments, like other people are noticing the lack of vintage craft books out in the thrift world. That makes me feel better - sometimes you start to feel like the universe is conspiring against your thrifting mojo. Or maybe that's just me?!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Recently I saw a post on design sponge about oh my cavalier. {she has an etsy shop, a blog & does cool embroidery!} I found her dressed animals really lovely and was inspired by them to create a bird girl with an embroidered dress.


I scanned in a fashion illustration from a dover book & a bird from a vintage identification book and put them together on the computer. {It was much harder than I anticipated to find the right bird head to go with the body...}

I had trouble getting the image onto the silk {purchased at Joann’s in the remnant bin months ago}, finally ending up drawing it directly onto the fabric with the transfer pen using the light table.

I used fusible webbing to stiffen the embroidered dress and shoes so I could cut them out. {I have been scared of this stuff for ages but now I’m hooked and want to put it on everything!}

The background is from a roll of vintage wallpaper I bought this summer for 25 cents. I’m happy with how it looks with the teal. I used foam tape to attach her to the wallpaper so she's not flat against it and pins that came with the shadowbox to secure the wallpaper to the back of the frame.



I think I'm happy with the way she looks. I know I'm happy with following through with the idea - I usually just sit on them.

Oh - I upgraded my flickr account last night {I hit the ceiling for free photo uploads} and have taken the opportunity to create more sets so that if you come by its easier to find things – because I really like you…

p.s. Now I've got to add another flickr set for paint-by-numbers I guess, huh sweetjessie?! I have a couple but not nearly as many as I would like. You can't see my favorite because the dog is in front of it. And the two ones on the far right are actually paintings but not "by numbers" I got for free at the thrift store. I'll show my favorite for thrift day next week - now when are you going to show me one of yours?

I got this design in a lot from eBay when I first started embroidering and used it to practice my stitches.


I also thought I'd share this wall hanging I made as a gift for newborn twin girls. The image is from a children’s book and is from the story of Snow White & Rose Red I believe {I’m too lazy to go hunt down the book right now, sorry}. Its not very big, I think something like 12” by 6”.


I was inspired by all the great redwork I see out there in blogland and thought that it could be a nice alternative for a girl’s room, especially one being decorated by a graphic designer who was avoiding pink as much as possible.

I was so happy with the way this turned out and I have plans for at least 3 more in the near future, also based on fairy tales. Though, while I’m going to stick with all one color for the embroidery, I don't think I'll do red this time. But I will stick with the natural linen for the fabric since I love the subtle quality it brings to the piece. Maybe brown or light cream floss?

I did a similar combo of embroidery & fabric for my sister, although I kept it to one fabric pattern. Similar yet different...


I’m itching to get started on them but I need to finish an embroidery experiment first – I might be ready to share it tomorrow but we’ll have to see because all of sudden its gotten late!

Oh - I just found out the guy's making crepes for dessert tonight so I'm going to go help make dinner so I get an extra helping of Nutella in mine! Good night...
