I have so many little scraps of fabric that are too pretty to throw away, which recently gave me this idea for a quick & easy necklace:
I started with this pendant from hobby lobby:
took it apart, & used the smaller teardrop shaped piece to wrap a thin strip of fabric that I had pressed one edge of. at the end I just cut the fabric to stop on the backside & used a bit of glue to keep it from unraveling.

My mother-in-law was going to throw out her trunk of scraps to which I screamed "No! Give it to me!". I'm not sure what to do with them as I'm not a crafter but I think your idea would make a good girl scout project. Thanks for the inspiration... now to get that book so I can figure out what to do with the trunk of scraps ;o)
