I'm doing a purely decorative project for a friend so I'm not really concerned with how permanent or safe the methods are in this case. however, I do know the rub-on will scratch off without a coating of some kind to seal it...but the porcelain pen is dishwasher safe after it's been baked according to the manufacturer's directions. I'm really not sure if either method is, or could be food safe...sorry.

Did you use a stencil or freehand the stiched one - either way I am very impressed!
can you buy paper to make your own rub-ons (sorry im a newbie to creating) like they have for t-shirt transfer? I didnt realize this - will open up a whole world of new possibilities!
mmm3149 - to transfer the cross stitch lettering onto the plate I used carbon paper. the porcelain pen worked on top of it & in places where there was excess I was able to just scratch it off with my nail. however, having not baked the plate I'm not sure if it will have any negative affect on the ink.
anonymous - I don't know if you can make your own rub-ons, you might try doing a google search. I bought the ones I used at michaels, they were in the scrapbooking aisle.
Very fun, cool idea! Love it! I have a ton of vintage plates and rub-ons not being used. I can't wait to try this for my home. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas!
